Sault St. Marie Locks
These are the pictures we took when we went up to the Sault St. Marie Locks. The locks are actually on the St. Mary's River between Lake Heron and Lake Superior. There were rapids on the river and Lake Superior is 21 feet higher than Lake Heron. Therefore, the locks were constructed in the early 1900s to allow passage to the areas on the Lake Superior shore. That way ships were able to travel all the way from New York to Wisconsin. Over the top of Charles Irons' hat you can see the Canadian shoreline. In this picture you see two tops to large tents. They hold concerts and even on Wednesdays they hold a farmer's market. On both sides of the river the names of the towns are the same meaning St. Mary's - St. Sault Mary. Somewhere we have pictures of the bridge overtook Canada. We even saw a Walmart over in Sault St. Marie, Ontario, Canada. We didn't travel over to Canada on this outing.
